Amy A. Yasko,
Ph.D., NHD, AMD, HHP, FAAIM
Dr. Yasko has extensive expertise in biochemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology. In addition she has significant research and clinical experience in both allopathic and alternative medicine. The common thread that winds through these fields is her work with DNA and RNA and the desire to develop and implement safer approaches to personal health.
Recognized as an expert in the field of DNA/RNA based diagnostics and therapeutics she was a consultant to the medical and research community for over eighteen years. Her focus on RNA began more than thirty years ago when she isolated single copy RNA messages from transformed cells at Strong Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, coauthoring one of the first papers in the prestigious journal Cell on RNA levels of the c-myc cancer oncogene. Later, while a member of the Department of Hematology at Yale Medical Center, she worked to enhance the expression of specific eukaryotic RNAs from yeast developing prokaryotic/eukaryotic shuttle vectors. Dr. Yasko served as Director of Research at Kodak IBI developing molecular based kits sold worldwide for diagnostic and research purposes. As principle/owner of several biotechnology companies, including Biotix DNA and Oligos Etc., she co-developed the first low cost DNA synthesizer and was an inventor on numerous patents establishing novel chemistries and applications using DNA and RNA based therapeutics.
Dr. Yasko’s interest in RNA and DNA methodology has been consistently matched by her focus in natural approaches to health. Dr. Yasko was a member of the Dept. of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at Strong Memorial Hospital and worked to develop safer Haemophilus influenza vaccines. She has also spent years studying the relationship between energy transport and modes of antibiotic resistance by bacteria and has written articles and chapters in books on the subject, assessing the methods by which bacteria resist antibiotics and approaches to address this situation. During her tenure at St. Vincent’s Hospital in NYC, Dr. Yasko developed custom diets and used nutritional supplements to improve the cure rates of Hodgkin’s disease patients. She worked with Dr. Sherwood Lawrence to isolate some of the first clinical samples of Transfer Factor for use in these patients. She then went on to conduct molecular research on Transfer Factor in Dr. Hugh Fudenburg’s Immunology Dept. at the Medical University of South Carolina.
After receiving additional degrees as a traditional Naturopath and becoming a Fellow in Integrative Medicine, Dr. Yasko shifted her focus from biotechnology to concentrate more intensely on natural medicine. Her approach to addressing complex conditions such as autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other neurological issues is to use her knowledge of molecular pathways and biochemistry and apply it through the use of herbs and supplements. Dr. Yasko has spoken at conferences hosted by the New York Academy of Science, is listed in Who’s Who in Women, has received the CASD Award for RNA research in autism and has published close to seventy articles, chapters in books as well as entire books related to both DNA/RNA and integrative healthcare.
Dr. Yasko holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology/immunology and infectious diseases as well as the degrees of Doctor of Natural Health and Doctor of Naturopathy. She is a board certified Alternative Medical Practitioner, a board certified Holistic Health Practitioner and is a Fellow of the American Association of Integrative Medicine. She has served as a member of the scientific advisory board for NFAM (National Foundation of Alternative Medicine) and on the scientific advisory board of the Documenting Hope Project for chronic illness. She currently resides in rural Maine with her husband of 30 years and her Newfoundland dogs.
